Is Your Toothpaste Good For You?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The daily regimen requires many things from everyone, no matter who they are. One of those things is to brush the teeth.

Brushing the teeth helps to promote a healthy and beautiful smile, while aiding in the protection and prevention of gum diseases and/or cavities. Finding the right toothpaste is not only important but is necessary, as each person is different. There are some people who are more sensitive to some of the ingredients than others and may have a reaction due to their allergies.

When using a toothpaste and there is any kind of swelling at all in or around the neck, mouth, jaw or any part of the face with pain or anguish in the teeth and gums, stop using that particular brand of toothpaste. This isn’t good and shows there’s definitely something in the toothpaste that is causing the body to respond in a negative way. Contact a doctor to see what needs to be done to alleviate the symptoms.

Scrapes and cuts are bound to happen. Children and the elderly are likely to these injuries. Scrapes, usually caused by falling are not usually dangerous and do not require professional medical treatment. Common cuts, which nick the capillaries, the smallest form of the arteries’ located close to the skin, generally need typical first aid care. However, sometimes scrapes and cuts go deeper causing arteries, veins, nerves or bones to be damaged. When this happens professional medical care is essential. Scrapes and cuts on kids Scrapes and cuts are a fact of life when it comes to children. From the moment they start to crawl it is important to be prepared to deal with them. When a child gets scrapes and cuts, calm the child and let them know you’re there to help them. Abrasions, as most scrapes are known, can be painful because the outer layer of skin has literally been scraped off causing the blood vessels to break. This may cause the child to think the abrasion is worse than it is. As kids get older protecting them from cuts gets harder. Keeping glass, paper shredders, and other sharp objects out of reach of kids can help. However, even this isn’t fail proof. As children grow, they explore, learn how to ride bikes and become involved in sporting events making them susceptible to such injuries. Scrapes and cuts on the elderly Just as kids are bound to get scrapes and cuts, so are the elderly. The progressive deterioration in balancing reflexes makes it easier for an elderly person to fall. Aging skin becomes thinner, making it tear easier. Elderly skin can tear from something as easy as bumping the corner of a table. This puts the elderly population at a high risk for these injuries. Scrapes and cuts on an elderly person take longer to heal because of the blood vessel changes that occur during the aging process. Treating scrapes and cuts Regardless of age, scrapes and cuts should be treated the same way. First check to make sure the wounds are not deep enough to have severed an artery or vein. If the cuts are deep or you see tissue or bone, get professional medical attention immediately. Try to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound for fifteen minutes or until professional medical help arrives. If medical help is on the way, do not do anything else. If the wound will be treated at home, get the bleeding to stop, then wash the wound with soap and water, apply an antibacterial ointment and dress the wound. Check and redress the wound daily. If wound begins to swell, turn red or have an odor, seek professional medical help. These injuries can happen even when performing everyday tasks. Children and the elderly are naturally more apt to them. Don’t get caught without the proper medical supplies or the knowledge you need to deal with scrapes and cuts.

A Career in Medical Nursing: Patient Care Tech

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

As one of the more popular starting points in medical nursing, patient care tech jobs are becoming more popular both as an entry level position as well as a career position in larger hospitals, clinics and treatment centers. Within medical nursing, patient care tech professionals work with doctors, nurses and other hospital staff in direct contact with the patients, providing the day to day care to many of the patients within the facility. Unlike the staff that has completed a degree in medical nursing, patient care tech professionals will qualify for a CNA or certified nursing assistant credential after completing the required classes and successfully passing the examination.

Besides the basics for medical nursing, patient care techs will also complete such activities as blood collection, also known as phlebotomy, basic laboratory operation and procedures, perform CPR, provide first aid as well as perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) as well as help in medical examinations. Each individual in the medical nursing, patient care tech program will gain knowledge through classroom activities but will also complete real world practical skills development in a hospital or treatment center as part of their course of study.

The important of the patient care technicians or PCTs in the hospital and treatment facilities is becoming more important as the demand for services increases with the ever aging population. Many of the medical nursing patient car tech professionals will find work in long term care facilities and nursing home or assisted living homes that provide basic care for residents. In these types of environments the PCT may work one on one with a particular group of patients providing light personal care as well as general daily living support.

Many PCTs that work in hospitals and clinics work directly under the supervision of a head nurse or physician completing charts, measuring and recording vital statistics for patients as well as doing general laboratory work within the facility. The role of the medical nursing patient care tech can be very different from facility to facility which makes the career attractive for those that want to work in the healthcare field but also want to have a lot of variety and options in their career choices. Often PCTs that go on to finish their CNA program will then further their education and move into nursing careers either in RN (registered nurse) or BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs after they’ve working in the healthcare setting for a few years.

Sprains essential oils can help heal an injury as well as help with the pain and inflammation. There are some different kinds of oils that are more commonly used for sprains than others. The great thing about using essential oils to help with a sprain is that they often come with added bonuses, because they have excellent scents that have benefits as well. Sprains essential oils can be found at many different health food stores as well as pharmacies or online. However, essential oils are commonly used as an addition to the treatment suggested by a physician. Sprains can be serious injuries and should of course be treated primarily by a physician incase the injury is serious enough to need surgery or temporary casting. Essential oils can be an excellent way to help an injury while receiving other benefits as well. One of the most common sprains essential oils is chamomile. Chamomile has a soothing effect as well as a muscle relaxant. The scent of chamomile is stated to be sweet and fruity. The other bonus of chamomile is that it is a relaxant or sedative so that if the area is causing quite a bit of pain and getting or staying to sleep is a problem, chamomile can help with that as well. It can also help reduce headaches and therefore is good for neck sprains. The second of the sprains essential oils is lavender. Lavender is an anti-inflammatory therefore it helps reduce and prevent inflammation in a sprain. The scent of lavender is floral and woody. Like chamomile it is also a sedative so it may help obtain some sleep as well. Further to this, it also helps headaches and can help quite a bit with neck sprains. The primary effects of lavender are calming and therapeutic. The third of the sprains essential oils is rosemary. The scent of rosemary is stated to be woody and refreshing. Unlike the lavender and chamomile it is described as being stimulant. However, whether the choice is chamomile, lavender, or rosemary it is important to note that all of these are analgesics and therefore have a pain reducing element. The recommended way to apply these sprains essential oils is to place a few drops on a cold cloth and use it is a compress on the affected area. The oils can also be added to regular massage oil and used on the area as well. However, it is important to note that areas that are swollen should not be massaged directly. So perhaps if there is a lot of swelling the cold compress method is a superior idea.
